Whitmore claims to be staying at a campground and plans on returning to Winnipeg. Whitmore introduces (the boy) as his nephew and offers to sell the Kochs a portable DVD player for $60, saying all his money was stolen. That same day, Whitmore appears along with (the 14-year-old boy) at the Whitewood-area farm of Mike and Michelle Koch, directly across Highway 9 from the Miller family farm. Accompanied by (the 14-year-old boy), Whitmore asks if there is any work available, and says he would be willing to accept cash or gas as payment to help him get to Winnipeg.
